Lewisham Library hosted the first of a series of celebratory events across the borough for invited audiences of Six Book Challenge completers and their families. This involved 21 completers all mentored by workers from voluntary sector group, Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL), along with Lewisham Librarians. Appropriately, the event took place at the conclusion of Refugee Week.

Storyteller Sandra Agard entertained a packed room of certificate recipients and proud family members, before Alan Morrison from the Libraries Management Team awarded individual certificates. Alan commented: "The challenge isn't a race to see how can read six books quickly. It's about taking something that you're not confident about (in this case reading in English) and turning it into something you want to make time for because you now enjoy it and want to talk to others about it."

The room was bedecked with copies of individual reading diaries offering opinions of the books participants had read. All were keen to continue to make use of the free book loan service and to discuss their reading when they meet. Lewisham Library Service has been working with those providing informal learning to literacy and ESOL students, such as Community Education Lewisham, Lewisham College, Twin College and AFRIL.

It has also strengthened the partnership between Peterborough Libraries and Peterborough Regional College. And the SBC certificates were given the same importance as their literacy and numeracy qualifications so reading was at the heart of the college's courses."
26th of May was Six Book Challenge Celebration Day at Malvern Library. We celebrated the success of 8 Skills for Life students from South Worcestershire College who completed their Six Book Challenge. In addition to conventional reading, we injected a sense of novelty and fun by introducing our group to the art of drama and dialogue through reading a play together. As their sixth book, they chose, read and rehearsed Victoria Wood's play "Dinnerladies" under the expert direction of their teacher, Hannah. In response to popular demand on the Celebrtation Day, the students rose to the challenge and read and performed a 7 minute excerpt from "Dinnerladies" to a room full of audience with great aplomb. A fantastic result !
